Stephen Piper, Managing Director of Forecasting for Platts, has worked as a consultant in the electric utilities business for over 10 years, specializing in market price forecasting, economic feasibility assessment, demand forecasting, and environmental analysis. Mr. Piper has analyzed nearly every electricity market in North America in support of merchant plant feasibility studies, asset valuation, and price forecasting. His clients have included power plant developers, investment banks, electric utilities, and industrial end-users.


Mr. Piper is responsible for preparing quarterly forecasts of electricity demand for North America in support of the Platts Power Outlook, as well as for customized client studies. In addition, Mr. Piper analyzes emerging emission markets for air pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide to forecast compliance strategies and emission allowance prices. In the natural gas industry, Mr. Piper’s experience covers engagements involving fuel procurement audits of LDCs, assessments of LDC strategies for service unbundling and retail competition, and competitive assessments of interstate pipelines. He earned a BA in History from Grinnell College and an MPM in Environmental Policy from the University of Maryland School of Public Affairs.
